Bieles, Jan. 29, 2017, chime 3 p.m. Wout Van Aert appears at the start of the cyclocross World Cup wearing green Michelin Mud-tubes that sport director Niels Albert had retrieved from under the dust in his basement. A striking choice that no one had seen coming. But it turned out to be a golden move. On the course in Luxembourg that was plotted on an old quarry, it rained flat tires. Thanks to the green tubes from Niels Albert’s basement, Van Aert was less bothered by the treacherous surface than his competitors and crowned himself cyclocross world champion for the second time in a row. Archrival Mathieu van der Poel, like many others, rode that race on the traditional, crude tubes called Rhinos.
